The palette verdict is in, and it is a relaxing one: Benjamin Moore’s 2021 Paint Color of the Year is Aegean Teal 2136-40. I think most of us would agree this type of calm, cool color is an appropriate [and much-needed] choice for 2021.

Benjamin Moore’s take on their color is a sense of calm and comfort; they invite us to “Celebrate the simple pleasures.” Think beach house, sand, sun, afternoon naps, relaxing with a book, a favorite sweater, baking bread, cooking with Mom, wind in the trees, anti-city life. The hint of green mixed in transforms the blue, makes it feel slightly warmer, and takes me to the Mediterranean. Aegean is an apt description.

Teal and blue-grays are en vogue, as noted in KBB Collective’s article Top Eight Trending Kitchen Cabinet Colors. They highlight “The Subtle Blue,” “The Calming Gray,” and “The Breezy Blue” on their list. These shades have an airy, clean, sophisticated feel and inspire relaxation.

Benjamin Moore features Aegean Teal on walls on their web gallery, but Martha Stewart suggests that you can also start small by using the shade for a project like cabinets or a door. For more small project ideas, think picture frames, mirror frames, a picnic table, Adirondack chairs, or perimeters of raised panels.

Hues inspired by nature are a common 2021 theme. Behr has named Canyon Dusk as their 2021 Color of the Year, and Sherwin-Williams has named theirs as Urbane Bronze. Behr is also highlighting a range of teals on their Color Trends 2021 palette.

Summer is a perfect time for DIY. Out with the old (all things 2020), and in with the new. Go pick up a paintbrush and get creative!
