From structural changes and space planning to cabinetry, finishes, and lighting, we coordinate every detail when remodeling your entire home on Cape Cod — with transparency and craftsmanship at the core. Project Spotlight: Whole Home Remodel in East Falmouth
Our Clients
A couple relocating from Illinois to Cape Cod were excited to make their East Falmouth home truly theirs. The house had potential, but previous renovations had fallen short. Their goal was to create a bright, cohesive, and contemporary home, with two clear priorities: spaces that functioned well and felt just right.
Existing Conditions
Originally built in 1988, the home had a disjointed layout, aging finishes, and the kind of piecemeal updates common in older Cape Cod homes. The kitchen was cramped with poorly placed white laminate cabinets and an awkward appliance layout. Lighting was minimal due to vaulted ceilings and outdated fixtures. The primary bathroom was similarly neglected, lacking storage, proper ventilation, and any sense of comfort or flow.
Other areas of the home had inconsistent finishes and telltale signs of past work done without long-term thinking — from twisted framing and misaligned supports to an inefficient use of space.
Homeowners’ Vision
They were looking for a clean, modern, and cohesive home that felt warm, functional, and tailored to their lifestyle — and they wanted a turnkey solution they could trust to handle everything. The house had potential but needed a complete rework — from layout to finishes — to support everyday living, occasional entertaining, and quiet morning rituals.
Clients' Wish List
• A redesigned kitchen with better flow, smart storage, and a custom coffee bar• A spa-like primary bath with a soaking tub, double sinks, and expanded storage
• Clean, contemporary finishes — concrete-look tile paired with warm natural wood
• Updated lighting throughout for better function and layered ambiance
• Wood floors added and completely refinished
• A stronger indoor-outdoor connection, including a picture window with seasonal views
Our Solutions
To bring the clients’ vision to life, we reworked key areas of the home, focusing on flow, storage, lighting, and craftsmanship:
• Redesigned the kitchen and bath layouts for better flow and functionality
– including a custom cherry coffee bar, a soaking tub, and floating countertops with vessel sinks
• Upgraded windows and added layered LED lighting throughout
– including recessed ceiling lights, shelf lighting, and vanity fixtures for warmth and balance
• Unified the look and feel of the home with a cohesive materials palette
– concrete-look tile, warm bamboo accents, and modern finishes chosen for durability and style
Home Design Inspiration
A modern coastal palette of wood, soft concrete textures, and clean-lined fixtures unified the entire home. Bamboo was used extensively — in cabinetry, trim, and paneling — bringing warmth and sustainability to the design. Lighting was carefully planned for both function and aesthetic appeal, with recessed fixtures carefully placed to provide maximum lighting.
Every material and layout choice reflected the kind of thoughtful planning that defines high-end Cape Cod home remodeling.
Challenges We Faced
• Tight coordination was required to reframe interior walls and reposition plumbing for both the kitchen and bath
• Installing the wall-mounted tub filler required multiple rounds of adjustment due to hidden framing complications
• Integrating all lighting without conflicting with roof framing was a complex, time-intensive task
Kitchen & Coffee Bar
We reimagined the kitchen layout entirely, replacing the small replacement window with a larger casement to let in more light. A custom coffee bar with cherry cabinetry, floating shelves, and integrated power turned their morning ritual into a design feature.
A tall cabinet was crafted to house the microwave at a comfortable height and anchor the space. Lighting was fully upgraded with recessed LED fixtures, under-cabinet lights, and floating shelf lighting. The hand-hewn tile backsplash from Tile Bar (Brooklyn, NY) added depth and contrast to the polished countertops and sleek cherry cabinetry.
Primary Bath
We relocated the closet door to accommodate a freestanding Victoria & Albert soaking tub, backed by bamboo paneling, and an in-wall tub filler. We added a double floating vanity on bamboo countertops with a custom tall cabinet in between for storage. Oversized 24"x48" concrete-look tiles were installed with tight joints to mimic a poured finish. Regressed LED lighting and backlit mirrors created soft, shadow-free light.
Other Spaces
In the primary bedroom, we installed a picture window to capture wooded views and seasonal glimpses of the Childs River. Throughout the remodeled areas, we used LOTUS dim-to-warm LED recessed lighting and curated wood detailing to keep the palette clean but warm.
How Our DRS Approach Delivered This Remodel
🔍 Discovery & Planning
We started with a detailed walk-through and planning phase, focused on how the clients truly live — not just how they want the space to look. Clear priorities were established early: function, light, and warmth.
🎨 Design-Remodel Integration
Our in-house team handled both design and production, ensuring nothing got lost in translation. We updated plans quickly as ideas evolved, keeping the vision intact while refining the details.
👷️ Expert Project Oversight
Every material, layout, and lighting choice was coordinated directly by us. From hidden framing issues to precise tub filler placement, we solved problems before they became delays.
📞 Ongoing Communication
With the clients out of state, we provided regular updates, photos, and quick check-ins — so they always felt in control, even from 1,000 miles away.
✅ Results You Can Feel
The end result? A home that’s warm, cohesive, and completely custom — on time, as quoted, and built to support our client’s lifestyle for years to come.

What Our Clients Say
“We went looking for a contractor to remodel our house with trepidation, expecting the worst. You know all the horror stories already. If you're wanting to avoid all of them, go with @designREMODEL. John earned our trust every step of the way. In the design process, John returned detailed plans for every amendment we made within a day or two. The meticulousness of these plans—not just mock-ups on computer that look nice (which we got from another place), but old school, to the eighth inch designs of every element—was what made us choose him for the remodel.
After the remodel started, John was in almost daily contact with us, as we were out of state. No detail was too small for a quick check-in. If we were heading in an unworkable direction, he gently went through our options to get us as close to our vision as possible. He secured top tradespeople who could do the custom work we asked for. His billing was meticulous as well; the entire project was completed within two weeks of when he said and to the dollar amount he said (any additions were things we added and were willing to pay for).
Particularly if you're looking for a contractor who will match your unique vision rather than a pre-conceived idea of what an interior should look like, you'll be delighted with @designREMODEL. We love our new home!”

Home Remodeling FAQs
- What is the benefit of remodeling a whole house rather than renovating one room at a time? expand_more
-
Remodeling one room at a time can lead to disjointed design, repeated disruptions, and extra costs as plans shift. Finishes don’t always match, timelines stretch out, and underlying structural issues often go unresolved.
A whole home remodel starts with a unified plan — bringing consistency to your layout, flow, materials, and lighting. With one expert lead and coordinated trades, your home works together as a complete, intentional space.
You get better long-term value, fewer interruptions, and a finished home that looks, feels, and functions exactly the way you want it to — without the stress of piecemeal projects.
- How do you plan and prioritize in a whole home remodel? expand_more
-
Whole home remodels require more than good design — they need a smart plan and clear priorities. We start by understanding how you use your home now and how you want it to work going forward.
Then we phase the project in a way that makes sense for your timeline, budget, and living arrangements. Whether we’re remodeling everything at once or in stages, you’ll have a step-by-step roadmap from the start — including layouts, selections, costs, and timing — all managed by one expert lead.
- Can I live at home during a whole house remodel? expand_more
-
Not always — it depends on the scope and whether we’re remodeling the entire home at once or in phases. Many full-time Cape residents choose to stay off-site, especially if major plumbing, electrical, or structural work is involved.
We’ll talk through options with you during the planning and make sure expectations are clear. If you’re a second homeowner, we coordinate everything and provide regular updates while you're off-Cape.
